The Workshop:
At the bedrock of the nonprofit sector is a commitment to community leadership; that's why organizations have a board of directors rather than individual owners. Board members have responsibility to shepherd an organization's mission, enact sound policy, and ensure financial stability. At the same time, many organizations are led by talented and hardworking staff who bring expertise and take responsibility for turning the words of a mission statement into impact in our communities. In our ideal world boards and staff enact these complementary roles to power their organizations.
But, we don't live in an ideal world. Even with the best intentions it can be complex, confusing and even frustrating to create a working partnership between boards and staff. In this session, we'll use scenarios to get specific about roles and relationships. This session will be interactive and you can count on some great opportunities for dialogue with your colleagues (yes, come with your board!) You'll leave with tools you can use at each board meeting - like a better board agenda, a decision making line, and a list of great questions for board members.
Who should attend:
Nonprofit board members and nonprofit staff leadership
Light refreshments will be available for in-person attendees. This program is available to all nonprofit agencies. tacy Van Gorp, Ph.D. co-founder of See What I Mean (SWIM) consulting works with national and regional nonprofit organizations across the US to activate change. SWIM specializes in strategic planning, evaluation and research, and navigating organizational change. For 12 years she was the Executive Director of the RJ McElroy Trust, and previously led the nonprofit leadership program at the University of Northern Iowa.
